tim is best known for his open, closed, and empty paintings. his artworks commonly feature bold lines, dramatic color and melancholy subject matter. his art tends to tell the story of the upside down view of life as he paints images of mankind in its most exposed, fragile and vunerable states. his paintings at first glance may appear dark, morose or unpleasant to some; but after closer examination their beauty is revealed as one considers the complexity and delicate nature of the emotions conveyed through his works.
born in 1974 on an idaho farm near a snake river, tim is a self-taught living artist who began painting in his teens. though he has no formal art training he quickly began to understand the use of pastels, acrylics and oils to convey feelings, thoughts and dreams. formulating his own techniques that use bold lines, dark color tones and high contrast values. in many of his works you will find his signature line movements that seem to emphasize a trichotomy of precision and a surreal lack of control.
through his open, closed and empty galleries, he revels in depicting raw, unguarded, and unsuppressed emotion. he seems to almost condense the emotion displayed in his works into is purest form allowing the viewer to not just see but feel what his artwork is depicting. perhaps the artist’s style can best be summed up in his own words:
“visual art serves a great purpose and it has a core function of our dreams. that purpose is not to show what has been seen, but to show what can be seen. to make the impossible possible from emptiness. that’s the core principal within existence. it’s about making something that is visually moving not only in terms of color, technique and space, but also in terms of feeling, emotion, and reaction. a painting should have an entity of its own that has the ability to speak, move, and convey feelings to a viewer not only in this lifetime – but also in many other lifetimes. ”
when asked why he paints in a trichotomy manor he states, “open a door to find something that should have been closed is the best way to empty a wall. but to open a door and find something that shouldn’t have been closed is the best way to fill empty wall. a philosophy in painting, dreaming, and objective thought. painting is just an open window and with an empty wall it is a way to close a door for you.”
